More than 150 children from our schools have been competing in a day of sporting fun.

In early March the Community Games 2018 was held at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre. The event, organised by charity SportInspired and supported by Lendlease and Haringey Council, saw different teams from Brook House and St Francis de Sales primary schools competing in six activities: boxing, basketball, dodgeball, street dance, athletics, and the Paralympics sport, boccia.

“I really enjoyed the street dancing,” said Gelila, aged nine from St Francis de Sales. “Days like this are great fun and they make me want to do more sport. Perhaps you’ll see me on the telly one day!”

Besides encouraging children to try different sports the day was about teamwork and team spirit with a trophy given out for good sportsmanship.

Secondary school students from Duke’s Aldridge Academy had also volunteered to be team ‘leaders’ and help the younger children throughout the day.

“I came along to gain leadership skills and learn to be more confident and more responsible,” said David, aged 13. “My job was to help the kids be excited about what they’re doing and give them the confidence to try different sports even if they think they might not like it. As a result I feel more confident and inspired too!”
